Dante (Get Fonzie)

Gelding Thoroughbred

Dante was rescued from the dogger truck after he was bought by the dogger at Laidley sales. We paid $500 to save him. He kept going lame and we thought it was an abscess that wouldn’t heal. We had him xrayed which showed a large Karetoma (benign tumor). Dante had surgery to remove it and most of the hoof wall. He remained in hospital waiting for the hoof to heal and grow back. He had very special treatment from the vets at Redlands and began wearing special shoes, with the hoof half grown down. He was released from hospital after a 5 month stay but needed to be stabled in the short term. Dante’s hoof was still not growing to the vet’s satisfaction. We took him to UQ for a second opinion and had his hoof scanned. Sadly, it showed that there was another keratoma. We could have had him operated on again but the chances of success were slim and it would have meant stabling Dante for another very long period. Dante was sick and tired of being locked up and it just wasn’t fair on him. We allowed him out of the stable to run around the paddock and be a horse again for a whole week and he ran around and loved every minute. Farewell our beautiful Dante – we all fought so hard for you..
